A Quick Guide to Depuffing Your Face

By Red Dimaandal-Escamillas

From water retention to an evening of alcohol, there are many different factors that might be the culprit behind facial swelling.

Puffiness in the face is fairly common and often linked to physical or environmental stress. When the body is under strain, it tends to retain water where it can (the face) as a response to various stressors. One of the main culprits is dehydration, which can be worsened by alcohol and caffeine, both of which have dehydrating effects. A high salt intake is another major factor, which is why you might wake up puffy after a night of chips and margaritas. A lack of sleep and allergies can also contribute to facial swelling.

How to rectify the situation? Read on for tips on how to depuff your face now.

Drink Less Alcohol

Alcohol causes your blood vessels to widen, which can make them appear larger under the skin. In particular, heavy drinking or having more than eight alcoholic drinks per week can cause under-eye puffiness. Alcohol also dehydrates you, which may cause your body and face to retain water.

Get Enough Sleep

Not sleeping enough is a major contributor to puffiness. It is recommended that healthy adults get at least seven hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Some adults need even more sleep, like eight to nine hours—and, if you’re sick or not feeling well, it’s not uncommon to require even more Z’s.

Hydrate

Drinking enough water can help ensure that you stay hydrated. Despite the common advice to “drink eight eight-ounce glasses of water per day,” there isn’t any real research that says just how much plain water you should drink every day. Still, you should be sure to drink water throughout the day for your specific body and lifestyle.

Try gua sha

Gua sha helps reduce facial puffiness by stimulating both Chinese meridian points and the lymphatic drainage system. This gentle massage technique boosts blood circulation, enhances skin’s oxygen levels, and regulates our internal balance, whilst removing toxins and stagnation.

Try Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a great way to reduce puffiness and swelling as it provides a cold shock to the skin’s surface. It sends a regenerative flow of fresh blood to the area, which boosts the skin’s metabolism while flushing away toxins and reducing water retention. The cold also constricts the muscles, creating a lifted and firm appearance.
