Alexandra Eala made history in New York as the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam main-draw singles match in the Open Era, rallying from 1–5 down in the final set to stun World No. 14 Clara Tauson in a nail-biting 13–11 tiebreaker at the US Open.

The match had all the makings of a classic. Tauson, a three-time WTA champion, looked firmly in control as she surged to a commanding lead in the final set. But Eala dug deep, clawing her way back point by point until the Grandstand court roared with energy. When she finally sealed victory on her fourth match point, the 19-year-old collapsed onto the court in tears, the crowd erupting in a wave of cheers.

“It was so, so difficult,” Eala admitted in her on-court interview. “I was so happy I was able to dig deep and push the limit, physically and mentally. This was it.”
What made the victory even more special was the atmosphere that surrounded her. With New York’s Filipino community filling the stands, it felt less like neutral ground and more like a homecoming. “You know, to be Filipino is something I take so much pride in,” Eala said. “I don’t have a home tournament, so to be able to have this community here at the US Open, I’m so grateful that they made me feel like I’m home.”

From the first ball, the environment reflected the city’s electric pulse. Tauson, clearly rattled by the noise, even voiced her frustration to the umpire. But for Eala, the crowd’s energy was fuel, every chant of “Let’s go, Alex!” pushing her further until she flipped the script on a night where defeat seemed certain.

Back in the Philippines, her triumph is igniting a wave of tennis fever. Courts are fully booked, young players are signing up for lessons, and casual fans are picking up rackets for the first time. The sport, once niche, is now drawing mainstream attention, fueled by Eala’s story of ambition and grit.

“Anything is possible, and to dream big,” she reflected. “Although there’s no one from my country who did this before, I took inspiration from anyone I could, from my family, from my brother. Just to be ambitious and to dream big and know that you can do it.”
For a generation of aspiring athletes, Eala is proof that with determination and belief, even the biggest stages in the world can feel like home.
