There was a time when eye drops were a remedy you kept tucked away in a medicine cabinet for emergencies. Today, they’ve become everyday essentials.
The moment our eyes feel gritty from hours of screen time or sting after a long commute, we instinctively reach for that small, cooling bottle. Dry and tired eyes have become such a common part of modern life that grabbing eye drops at convenience stores, pharmacies, and supermarkets feels as routine as buying bottled water. That instant wave of relief has made many of us quietly dependent on them.

Our growing reliance isn’t surprising. Modern environments are harsh on our eyes. Pollution fills the air with particles that irritate the ocular surface. Hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy or menopause, can reduce tear production. Age naturally decreases the quality and quantity of tears. Allergies, too, trigger inflammation and dryness, leaving eyes itchy and uncomfortable. Add prolonged exposure to air-conditioning and digital screens, and it’s no wonder dry eye symptoms are becoming more widespread across all age groups.
In our country, where humid heat meets urban pollution, eye drops have become a quick fix many swear by. Brands like Rohto are popular for their cooling sensation and fast-acting relief, offering formulations designed to refresh strained eyes. Another trusted option is Systane, known for lubricating drops that help restore moisture and protect against further dryness.

But as eye drops become our pocket-sized comfort, it’s worth pausing to ask whether we’re treating the cause or just the symptom. While these products provide welcome relief, experts often advise balancing their use with healthier screen habits, protective eyewear outdoors, and proper hydration. Eye drops may be today’s instant solution, but understanding why our eyes are crying out for moisture in the first place could help us depend on them a little less.
