Blackjacks, Are You Ready For 2NE1’s Comeback World Tour in October?

By Marane A. Plaza

Get ready to get the B-E-S-T from legendary Korean girl group 2ne1, as the band is confirmed to have a major comeback this year as announced in an unexpected YouTube video by YG Entertainment label founder Yang Hyun-suk.

The “first successful girl group from YG,” 2ne1 is one of the iconic performing groups who defined the second generation of K-Pop stars and put the Korean pop music in the global map.

In the video, the YG label founder narrated how the girls reached out to the company about their desire to celebrate the group’s 15th anniversary, with photos of the meeting making the rounds on social media in June. YG responded to the request positively, giving Blackjacks the ultimate 2ne1 comeback they never thought could still even happen!

CL, Dara, Bom and Minzy will be going on a world tour starting in Seoul this October. They will then head to Osaka in November and Tokyo in December. The tour will continue through to 2025, reportedly to align with a YG family concert.

Debuting in 2009, 2ne1 introduced a fresh take on Korean pop music with their “Fire” music video, showcasing an experimental beat, out-of-this-world choreo and in-your-face street fashion that’s never been done by any Korean girl groups before. With Korean girl groups presented as being girly and prim prior, 2ne1 broke the mould of what a K-Pop girl group should sound and look like.

Dara, formerly known as actress Sandara Park in the Philippines, has been dearly loved by Filipinos for being an active actress in Pinoy showbiz from 2004, to her 2009 K-pop transformation in her native South Korea.

CL, the leader and main rapper of the group, has been loved for her unparalleled stage presence, briliant stage performances, fashion sense, and baddest female persona.

Park Bom, the main vocalist of the group, has always been considered as one of the best singers in South Korea.

Minzy, before any other K-Pop groups from third gen had ever debuted, has always been considered as one of the best dancers Korean pop entertainment has ever produced.

2ne1 is one of the first multi-awarded Korean groups globally, especially with their hit song “I Am The Best” in 2011.

In 2015, the group went on a hiatus after an unfortunate “scandal” involving Park Bom. Years later, explanations about her mental health problem that would need medicines from the USA and were illegal in SK would clear her name, and therefore would’ve taught South Korea to be a little more understanding and considerate of the mental wellbeing of K-Pop stars.

Each member pursued solo ventures in 2015, but went on to give fans a surprise performance later that year at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awars (Mama) in Hong Kong, which became the most-viewed Mama performance by a girl group.

Shortly after, Minzy announced her departure from 2NE1, leaving fans in dismay. In 2016, YG Entertainment announced that the group would be disbanding officially and their final single, Goodbye, was recorded as a trio and released in January 2017.

In April 2022, 2NE1 performed their hit song I Am the Best for the first time since their disbandment with a surprise reunion at Coachella, which was named by several publications as one of the year’s best performances at the music fest, and one of the biggest pop culture moments ever.

2ne1’s comeback will definitely gather K-pop fans into a frenzy during their tour performances.

Additionally, Yang hinted in his YouTube video at the debut of a new girl group. You may watch the full video here.
