Ahead of the celebration of the Philippine Independence Day, we want to give flowers to the modern-day Filipino heroines, or female heroes, who have remarkably moved forward the global conversation on anti-sexual abuse on women with their courage and bravery to step forward and tell their personal stories, which then led to bringing justice to sexual abuse victims.
1. Ambra Battilana Gutierrez
The Italian-Filipina model’s bravery was the catalyst to the strong force behind the #MeToo movement.
Ambra’s 2015 police report and undercover cooperation laid the early, vital groundwork for the global #MeToo movement.
After big titan movie producer Harvey Weinstein inappropriately touched Ambra during a casting meeting in a Manhattan hotel, Gutierrez went to the New York Police Department, wherein she agreed to the 2015 NYPD Sting Operation wherein she was asked to wear a hidden wire to a subsequent meeting with her abuser. She successfully recorded Weinstein apologizing to her, and appearing to confess to the groping.
Despite the audio evidence, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office initially opted not to press charges in 2015. At the time, Gutierrez faced intense backlash and victim-blaming from the tabloid press, causing her to step away and spend time doing charitable work in the Philippines.
When explosive reporting by The New Yorker in 2017 brought widespread attention to Weinstein’s predatory behavior, Gutierrez’s secret audio was published, helping to ignite the #MeToo movement.
Years later, Gutierrez served as a key uncharged witness and testified in Weinstein’s subsequent criminal trials. She testified in his 2022 Los Angeles trial, which further cemented his convictions.
Today, Gutierrez continues to work with advocacy groups like the Model Alliance to safeguard young women in the fashion industry and hold abusers accountable.
2. Cassie Ventura
Fil-Am R&B singer and model Cassie Ventura forwarded the conversation on anti-sexual abuse on women by shattering the culture of silence around powerful music industry abusers, and shifting how the public understands domestic violence, coercion, and consent.
Her high-publicity case against influential music producer Sean “Diddy” Combs has helped put the spotlight on the years of manipulation that victims face whenever they try to speak out against sexual abuse.
Cassie put a face to the phrase “Believe Victims the First Time.” Following the release of hotel surveillance footage verifying her abuse, Cassie released a public statement urging society to believe victims immediately, rather than waiting for years of definitive proof or perfect timing.
In late 2023, Cassie filed a landmark federal lawsuit detailing a decade of physical abuse, rape, and sex trafficking by music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. This lawsuit opened the floodgates for multiple other victims to step forward.
She has helped redefine consent and coercion in romantic relationships. During the high-profile criminal trials, her testimony forced a public reckoning on how power imbalances distort choice. She highlighted that complying with an abuser out of fear or survival—such as being forced into organized sexual encounters termed “freak-offs”—is not true consent.
3. Cassie
Philippine Survivor Leader & Global Advocate Cassie helped forward the convo on international policy and child safety.

Cassie is a prominent survivor leader who partnered with the International Justice Mission (IJM) to combat the Online Sexual Exploitation of Children (OSEC). After being rescued from a livestreamed trafficking ring at age 17, she chose to use her voice on the world stage.
She influenced the global legislation. Cassie traveled internationally to advocate for systemic change, including testifying at a Parliamentary Roundtable in the United Kingdom. Her testimony pressured tech regulators to hold digital platforms legally accountable for proactively detecting and disrupting livestreamed abuse.
Her testimony mobilized FinTech accountability. She has spearheaded global conversations urging financial technology and digital payment services to block money transfers used by overseas predators to purchase livestreamed abuse materials.
As a founding member of the Philippine Survivor Network, Cassie frequently speaks at national justice conferences and school awareness programs. She educates law enforcement and communities on trauma-informed responses, ensuring that the human cost of cybercrime remains at the center of judicial policy.
Aren’t these Filipinas a total bad-ass for moving forward not just the convos on anti-sexual abuse on women, but also the much-needed justice by putting their abusers behind bars? Totally deserving of our respect and admiration especially this month of Philippine Indendence Celebration.
