Fresh off his Oscar sweep for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan is about to drop his most physically punishing movie yet: an IMAX-exclusive adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, The Odyssey (2026). Rolling into theaters on July 17, 2026 with a massive $250 million budget, this isn’t your standard Hollywood CGI fest. It’s a raw, heavy character study about a war veteran just trying to find his way back home.
If you’re wondering why the internet is losing its mind over this, here is a quick look behind the scenes.
Real Rocks, Real Waves, Zero Green Screens

Nolan famously hates digital shortcuts, and for The Odyssey, he pushed his practical-effects obsession to a breaking point.
- Pure IMAX History: This is the first feature film shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film cameras. IMAX literally had to build new, whisper-quiet camera tech just so Nolan could record actual on-set dialogue without the machines sounding like leaf blowers.
- A Brutal Global Trek: Instead of filming inside a cozy studio in Atlanta, the crew dragged massive camera rigs through rough terrain across Italy, Greece, Iceland, Morocco, and Western Sahara.
- The 6-Meter Monster: To bring the Cyclops Polyphemus to life, Nolan skipped the computer-generated graphics and built a massive, 6×6 meter mechanical animatronic puppet. When Matt Damon fights it, he’s reacting to a real, moving physical mass on set.
An All-Star Cast with a Twist
The ensemble cast reads like a Hollywood wishlist, but Nolan is tweaking the classic dynamic to make the characters feel incredibly human.
- Matt Damon as Odysseus: A battle-weary king suffering through an existential crisis. Damon actually grew a massive real beard for the role, playing a leader carrying the heavy emotional trauma of the Trojan War.

- Anne Hathaway as Penelope: Far from a helpless wife waiting around patiently, Nolan’s Penelope is a brilliant, furious queen matching her husband’s sharp intellect to protect her kingdom.

- Tom Holland as Telemachus: A young prince carrying the crushing burden of a legendary father he doesn’t even remember.

- Zendaya as Athena: The tactical goddess of wisdom who acts as Odysseus’s brilliant divine protector.

- Robert Pattinson as Antinous: The ruthless, smooth-talking leader of the suitors looking to steal the throne.

In the wildest casting choice of the year, Nolan also tapped Travis Scott to play a classical bard. In an interview with Time Magazine, Nolan explained that he wanted to draw a straight line between the rhythmic oral poetry of ancient Greece and modern hip-hop.
A Raw, Industrial Symphony
Don’t expect sweeping, romantic Hollywood violin solos here. Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson built an abrasive, unforgettable soundscape. He blended ancient Greek instruments like the aulos and lyre with industrial clangs from bronze gongs, heavy metal rails, and haunting vocals.
The result is a dense, intense 2 hours and 53 minutes that feels less like a historical museum piece and more like a visceral survival thriller.
