Cobblestones and Concertos: Why Malasimbo’s Intramuros Takeover Was One for the Books

Forget the trek up the mountain—this year, Malasimbo brought the magic right to the heart of Manila. Moving the festival to the historic Puerta Real Gardens in Intramuros was a masterstroke that traded jungle vibes for a breathtaking backdrop of Spanish-era stone walls and moonlit heritage. The Stylish team was front and center for the festivities, and we can confirm: the Walled City has never felt this alive.

There’s something surreal about hearing world-class reggae and afrobeat echoing off 16th-century fortifications. The gardens were transformed into an immersive art sanctuary, featuring glowing installations like the Giant Dandelions—crafted from recycled materials—that illuminated the night. It wasn’t just a festival; it was a vibrant intersection of history and modern creativity.

The “cool crowd” was definitely in attendance, blending effortlessly with the artsy, backpacker spirit Malasimbo is known for. We spotted Will Dasovich navigating the cobblestones, likely capturing the festival’s high-energy return to the city. Solenn Heussaff was also seen enjoying the eclectic mix of art and music, looking perfectly at home amidst the festival’s signature “functional fashion” aesthetic.

Rain, Rhythm, and Resilience

The true highlight of the night, however, was something no one could have planned. As the sky opened up during the evening sets, the typical festival panic was nowhere to be found. Instead of scattering, the audience embraced the downpour.

There is nothing quite like dancing to the soulful rhythms of Julian Marley & The Uprising or the high-octane energy of Seun Kuti while rain-soaked and barefoot on the grass. The crowd didn’t just endure the weather—they turned it into a celebration. Playing in the rain became the night’s defining act of joy, with the audience’s energy only surging as the ground got muddier. It was a reminder that at its core, Malasimbo is about community and the freedom to lose yourself in the moment.

A Night to Remember From the interactive performances by Daloy Dance Company to the local food stalls that kept everyone fueled, Malasimbo 2026 in Intramuros was a triumph. It proved that you don’t need a mountain to find magic—sometimes, all you need is a historic wall, a little rain, and a whole lot of soul.
