Crafting Identity: The Royal Atlas Bag by Fino and Royal Pineda

By Joy Agoylo

A new icon in Filipino design has arrived. The Royal Atlas Bag, born from the collaboration between Fino Leatherware and acclaimed architect Royal Pineda, is more than a bag, it’s a tactile map of life and a celebration of Filipino identity.

From a Photograph to a Vision

The collaboration began with a simple photograph. In 2025, Dr. Rommel Bautista of Fino Leatherware received a snapshot of Royal Pineda standing on a street curb in Germany, leather Fino Overnighter in tow. “For someone of his caliber, it was striking that Royal would choose a locally-made bag over the usual luxury brands,” Dr. Bautista recalls. The photo sparked the idea for a collaboration that would marry craftsmanship, design, and cultural pride.

Pineda, a longtime admirer of Fino Leatherware, was drawn to the premium leatherwork and meticulous attention to detail. “I would later find out that this clinical precision is attributed to Rommel who is an eye surgeon,” he shares.

A Meeting of Minds

The first meeting between Dr. Bautista and Ar. Pineda lasted for hours. “Initially, I thought of having him work with waxed cotton,” says Dr. Bautista. But Pineda had a different vision.

“I always design for myself as the end-user,” Pineda explains. “I wanted a bag I could use every day, from the office to site visits, the city to the airport. Functionality is very important.”

Pineda’s concept reflected a deep pride in Filipino heritage, incorporating weaving as a cultural hallmark long before global brands adopted it.

Form, Movement, and Meaning

The Royal Atlas Bag was conceived as the ultimate architect’s bag, a tribute to form, movement, and meaning. Crafted in full-grain natural leather, it honors the rich tradition of Filipino leather craftsmanship. Every crease, softening, and natural mark is intentional, celebrating the unique character of the material.

Drawing inspiration from the Pasiking, a traditional Cordilleran carrier, the bag embodies travel, movement, and rooted identity. “We named it the Royal Atlas because of how it relates to maps and travel,” Pineda notes. “It carries the Filipino identity wherever it goes.”

The Royal Weave

The bag’s most striking feature is the Royal Weave, a nod to pre-colonial weaving techniques of the Cordilleras. Unlike contemporary leather weaving, each panel is punched, woven, and constructed with extreme precision, taking several days to complete. The diagonal configuration adds depth, dimension, and breathability, creating a bag that is as practical as it is beautiful.

A Bag for the Modern Filipino

The Atlas collection, which includes the Overnighter, Clutch, Crossbody, and Tote, is designed for creative Filipinos navigating cities, studios, airports, and landscapes. Every detail, from the tapered sides to detachable straps and leather framing, echoes a philosophy of intentional design and understated elegance.

“It is not just about aesthetics,” Pineda emphasizes. “It’s structure, dimension, depth all woven together. Every detail is formed by intention.”

Limited Edition, Timeless Design

The Royal Atlas Bag is available in limited quantities at Fino Leatherware stores. More than a fashion statement, it is a companion for the journey of the modern Filipino, embodying mobility, creativity, and cultural pride.
