Death Becomes Her: Sabrina Carpenter Debuts MV For Ultimate Nemesis Anthem “Taste” With Jenna Ortega

By Marane A. Plaza

We might’ve all found a catchy female nemesis anthem in “Taste” by American singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter, and a hilarious yet gory music video out of it too featuring Hollywood actress Jenna Ortega.

Fresh from her viral country synthpop song “Please, Please, Please” released in June from her album “Short ‘N Sweet,” Sabrina has once again introduced a visually-rich music video with an uber entertaining plot, plus a dash of her infamous dark humor in it too.

For the official MV of her new single “Taste” directed by the legendary Dave Meyers, it is pretty obvious the pop star got some references from the hit 1992 black comedy cult film “Death Becomes Her” starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn– playing the frenemies with co-Disney Channel alum Jenna.

The entire plot of the video surrounds the comedic yet morbid catfight between the blonde and the brunette, trying to murder each other, only for them ending up killing the man they’re fighting over, and befriending each other anyway in the end. A+ dark humor, I applaud!

Of course, the MV’s theme goes brilliantly well with the song’s very cheeky lyrics:

“I heard you’re back together and if that’s true
You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissing you
If you want forever, I bet you do
Just know you’ll taste me too”

I mean, could these lyrics be any wittier and spicier? And honestly these same very telling words have indeed called for a very valid reason to produce prolly one of this year’s top pop culture moments: Sabrina and Jenna sharing a fierce kiss in the music video.

According to some reports, “Taste” might be inspired by the singer’s very personal situationship experience with musician Shawn Mendez back in January 2023, only for him to be seen canoodling back with ex Camila Cabello at Coachella in April that same year. Nothing solid has been confirmed regarding this though and honestly, if we all got a marvelous work of art such as this short film that is “Taste,” who cares if that’s the real scoop anyway?!

Aside from the grim humor and camp aesthetic of the video, I am actually here for the few yet remarkable beauty and fashion moments donned by the two. Like seriously, Sabrina’s makeup in this one is snatched.

And how cute are Jenna’s outfits though? The “Wednesday” actress gave noteworthy beauty moments too.

There have been wishful social media posts running for months about the supposedly remake of “Death Becomes Her” eyeing Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as the stars. No confirmed report on that one too, so this hilarious, epic performance by these gorgeous vixens might’ve momentarily fulfilled the fantasy of a lot of cinephiles around the world effortlessly.

At this rate, with her consistently entertaining plots in her music videos for “Please, Please, Please” and “Taste”— matched with the artful film aesthetic of her MVs that then go perfectly well with her also consistently audacious, bad-ass, self-written lyrics, I believe it is just fair to conclude this music video review on a great note based on facts:

Sabrina Carpenter might be one of the best storytellers among the pop stars of this generation. And that’s on period.
