We are all too familiar with that feeling: we have the vision in our head for ourselves and future, yet the negative feelings seem to slow us down.
Cherry Pua-Africa, author of the book “When the Heart Attacks” and life coach to the big honchos of Nestle Philippines, Jollibee and the likes, explained that getting through your emotions is one of the keys toward heading to your vision’s realization.
Life Coach Cherry’s path to her own life purpose was not a straightforward destination either.
Finishing her college degree in Business Economics from the University of the Philippines Diliman, life coach always thought that her dream marketing job at Procter & Gamble would give her the satisfaction she was yearning for. Marketing for remarkable brands like Safeguard and Tide, her initial ambition was to excel in the corporate world by becoming the best employee she could be.
“In my own journey, I realized that my true calling is to work closely with people and to help them discover, reach and realize their potential,” life coach Cherry shared with STYLISH in an interview.
At 25 years old, she did a pivot in her own career by studying my Masters in Education also in UP Diliman, and eventually opening her own pre-school wherein she would passionately teach young kids with early education.
“I was already helping with my mother’s family business when I decided to double our office at home and rent it to be our preschool. Years after, I eventually closed the school after the implementation of K-12 Education Program in the country,” she said.
But her journey toward working closely with people and helping them reach their potential had indeed started. The teacher stint honed her skills in strategic thinking and discipline, which would later become crucial in her career as a life coach.
After taking formal classes in life coaching in the Philippines and Singapore, she finally focused on her true calling: becoming a life coach.
She started helping friends and family members navigate their personal and professional challenges. She found immense satisfaction in guiding others to unlock their potential and achieve their goals. This passion led her to formalize her role as a life coach, filling a niche that was relatively unknown at the time.
A life coach, as Cherry explains, helps individuals move from a current state—often a stuck or unproductive state—to a better, more resourceful state. This involves discussing emotions, mindsets, and strategies for success. Whether someone is seeking personal growth, facing a significant life change, or looking to enhance their professional skills, a life coach provides the tools and support needed to achieve these goals.
Cherry’s approach is holistic, focusing on improving behaviors and mindset. She believes that regardless of age, anyone can tap into their potential and make significant changes in their life. This belief is rooted in her own experiences and the countless success stories of her clients.
When working with new clients, Cherry begins by understanding their unique challenges and aspirations. For example, if a client is experiencing depression or anxiety due to business failures, Cherry’s goal is to help them see beyond their current state. She assists them in accessing their inner wisdom and best emotions, which are crucial for overcoming obstacles.
Cherry’s method involves identifying and eliminating mental barriers, allowing clients to see the resources and opportunities available to them. This process often leads to a profound transformation, where clients become more in charge of their responses and actions, connecting their inner world with their external reality.
“The role of the life coach or the mentor is to try to make those clouds disappear, so one can truly see the resources available to solve the problems and realize the vision or goal. But if it is still not working, what we do as a life coach is to put you closer to your line of vision.”
“You could actually access your true mentor, which is your own wisdom. That’s your best energy, that’s your best emotion– both that will replace all this depressive state.”
“You could be more in charge of your response if you look at it as connected to your inner world– meaning what is inside you just projects the outside. When you do inner reflection, you connect to your inner world, and you can eventually find how you can navigate your heart, mind and state to find your real calling, purpose and satisfaction. It is a process, but it can be done. A life coach can help you with that journey.”
