How Avel Bacudio Transformed Filipino Childhood Games Into the Philippine Team’s SEA Games 2025 Uniform

By Dara Clariza Evangelista

The journey to the SEA Games is rarely glamorous. For Filipino athletes, it’s years of early mornings, late-night training sessions, injuries, and quiet resilience. Every two years, they step onto one of Southeast Asia’s biggest sporting stages carrying not just their personal ambition but the pride of an entire nation. And as Team Philippines heads to Thailand for this year’s SEA Games, that pride is now reflected not only in their performance but also in what they wear.

Designer Avel Bacudio unveils “Laro ng Lahi”, a national uniform that transforms cultural memory into athletic identity. His reinterpretation of the barong, trousers, and vest creates a look that feels both grounded in tradition and ready for movement, very symbolically fitting for athletes who have trained their whole lives for moments like this.

The standout vest is crafted using indigenous piñavel, a fabric made from bamboo, pineapple, abaca, banana, and water hyacinth fibers. The textile represents centuries of Philippine weaving heritage, now tailored for the global sports arena. Its lightweight structure is engineered to manage heat, maintain shape through movement, and keep athletes comfortable under pressure.

But it’s the details that tell the story. Stitched across the barong are illustrations of beloved Filipino childhood games: piko, tumbang preso, luksong baka, sipa, yoyo. Before they were national athletes, many of these competitors spent their childhoods playing on the streets, running, jumping, competing with friends. Bacudio turns those memories into symbols of national pride, literally woven into the uniforms that will represent the country on an international stage.

This is fashion supporting Filipino athletes in the most meaningful way, by honoring their roots, elevating their identity, and giving them something proudly Filipino to wear as they compete. It’s a beautiful moment where culture, sport, and design come together, reminding us that every athlete carries a story stitched with heritage, discipline, and home.
