How Dolly Parton Taught Women to Rule the World

By Cedie Lazaro

The world feels a little less bright today. Dolly Parton has passed away at 80, leaving behind a life defined by grit, humor, and pure confidence. She wasn’t just a country music star; she was an inspiration for living life completely on your own terms. Dolly showed us how to stand tall, speak up, and look great doing it.

To honor her, let’s look back at how Dolly showed everyone what women can achieve, using her own sharp, bold, and funny words.

Changing the Rules of the Workplace

Long before closing the gender wage gap became a major corporate discussion, Dolly gave us the ultimate working woman’s anthem with 9 to 5. She exposed corporate sexism with a smile, but behind the scenes, her business mind was incredibly sharp. She made sure she owned her music catalog, her publishing rights, and her entire brand.

“You know, I look like a woman but I think like a man. And in this world of business, that has helped me a lot. Because by the time they think that I don’t know what’s goin’ on, I then got the money, and am gone.”

Looking Glamorous While Controlling Her Narrative

Critics spent decades saying Dolly wouldn’t be taken seriously because of her big wigs, outfits, and high-energy look. Instead of changing, she doubled down. She proved that a woman can love makeup, glamour, and fashion while still being the smartest person in the room.

“A lot of the press, the people who were top of the line said, ‘Dolly, no one’s ever gonna take you serious looking like that.’ I said, ‘Well, this is how I like to look, this is who I feel I am, and I’m comfortable in how I look…’”

“There’s a heart beneath the boobs and a brain beneath the wig.”

Owning Aging and Her Body

In a culture that expects women to age silently or pretend to look flawless without effort, Dolly was completely honest. She openly discussed her cosmetic surgeries and touch-ups, treating her choices as personal preferences rather than secrets to hide.

“After you reach a certain age, they think you’re over. Well, I will never be over.”

“If I see something saggin’, baggin’, or draggin’, I’m gone have it nipped, tucked, or sucked!”

Answering Critics With Real Wit

Instead of getting upset by the entertainment industry’s old “dumb blonde” jokes, Dolly turned the stereotype into her own punchline. Her quick humor shut down critics instantly, reminding everyone that nobody else gets to define your intelligence.

“I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb—and I’m not blonde either.”

Choosing Independence Over Expectations

Dolly didn’t wait for opportunities to come to her; she built her own path. From opening her own theme park to launching a global children’s literacy program, she lived by her own rules. She showed women everywhere that you don’t have to follow an established path if it doesn’t fit who you are.

“I know who I am and I don’t try to be nobody else. And if that ain’t good enough for you, too bad.”

“If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.”

Turning the Page

Dolly Parton lived life entirely on her own terms, proving you never have to shrink yourself to fit into someone else’s world. Her family shared that for her final rest, she asked to be laid in a bed of soft cotton because after a lifetime of wearing heavy outfits, she finally deserved to be comfortable.

While she has traded her stage clothes for a well-earned rest, the path she created for women remains wide open. The best way to honor her memory isn’t just by playing her music—it’s by bringing a little bit of her confidence into our own lives.

Go after that goal, start that project, wear what makes you happy, and never apologize for being yourself. Thank you for everything, Dolly. Your light will stay with us for a very long time.
