Some might call layering an art–and they wouldn’t be wrong. Whether it comes naturally to you or not, one thing is certain: the best layered outfits always start with good basics.
Layering invites us to get creative with our closet favorites, mixing and matching our beloved pieces in fresh ways. It also adds depth and personality to outfits, making our wardrobes more versatile, and lets us stretch our seasonal favorites across changing weather. Best of all, it helps us stay cozy in cool mornings and still feel comfortable when the sun comes out.

Use neutral colors as base
Starting with neutral colors for your base layers, like black, white, gray, brown, or beige, is a smart move. These tones are super versatile and can be easily mixed and matched with different pieces in your closet.
Be mindful about textures
Even the most over-the-top maximalist still approaches print mixing with caution, and the same goes for layering texture. Add too much and your look feels busy and random, skip it altogether, and you risk looking underwhelming.
Layer different lengths
Experimenting with different lengths is a smart way to achieve celebrity-inspired layering effects. Try layering a blazer over a vest or team a tunic with leggings, for a look that’s sleek yet full of dimension.
