How To Properly Clean Your Makeup Tools, According To A Pro Makeup Artist

By Red Dimaandal-Escamillas

Be honest, how often are you washing your makeup brushes?

Cleaning your makeup and tools might not be something you’ve thought much about. But it’s crucial to know how to clean them, how often to do so, and when it’s time to just throw them out.

How often should you clean and sanitize makeup brushes?

We sweep our faces with these brushes almost every day, but we can’t always say the same thing about how frequently we clean them. For starters, giving them a thorough washing every month or so is not enough. According to pro makeup artist Paoie Minerales, we should be washing our tools far more often to prevent bacteria buildup, “I clean my brushes with a brush cleaner after each use.”

“For deep cleaning, I use mild coconut soap after 4-5 uses. When it’s dry, I put them in a UV box to sanitize fully,” she adds.

How can you keep your makeup clean?

Since many beauty routines consist of multiple products—powders, foundations, concealers, mascaras, eyeliners, lipsticks—what’s the best way to practice being sanitary without ruining what we invested our precious cash in?

Paoie says, “I make sure my hands are clean if I wanna apply base makeup using my hands. I also use a cosmetic sanitizer to sanitize makeup products and put them on my UV box from time to time.”

Best makeup practices

Professional makeup artists follow certain safety protocols to ensure their tools and products are always clean. Here are a few more practices from Paoie you can use yourself:

  • I personally avoid using sponges because you can’t know for sure if you’ve fully cleaned and sanitized it for reuse. If ever I have to, I only use the disposable ones.
  • Avoid sharing your personal makeup kit with anyone else. If you use your own exclusively, you prevent most opportunities for exposure.
