In the Age of Shrekking, Is Anyone Really Safe from Heartbreak?

By Red Dimaandal-Escamillas

In the ever-evolving world of dating, new slang terms and trends emerge regularly–and the latest one comes straight out of the swamp. Shrekking, inspired by the iconic green ogre Shrek, has become the latest buzzword on social media to describe a particular kind of dating strategy, and the painful fallout that often follows. While it may sound humorous, this trend reveals a lot about ego, insecurity, and the illusions of control that people try to maintain in relationships.

What is Shrekking?

The term Shrekking refers to deliberately dating someone you think is below your standards–whether in looks, status, or personality–in the belief that this power imbalance will protect you from heartbreak. The logic is simple: if you’re out of their league, you’ll have the upperhand, feel more secure, and be less likely to get hurt. In essence, Shrekking is dating with a safety net–an attempt to shield one’s ego by staying firmly in the driver’s seat.

What it means to get Shrekked

However, this strategy often backfires spectacularly. To get Shrekked means that despite intentionally dating down, you still end up rejected, ghosted, or heartbroken by the person you assumed wouldn’t have the power to hurt you. It’s a painful and humbling reminder that attraction, compatibility, and emotional connection can’t be controlled by perceived leagues.

Ultimately, Shrekking underscores a truth of dating: no one is immune to vulnerability, no matter how carefully they try to guard their heart.
