Inside Bvlgari’s Role in Italy’s Jewelry History and Future

By Dara Clariza Evangelista

Italian jewelry has always lived at the intersection of artistry, identity, and history, carrying stories from one generation to the next. From ancient goldsmiths to modern ateliers, the country has shaped a legacy where beauty is never just decoration. It is a culture you can wear.

Italy’s jewelry roots stretch back to the Etruscans, whose mastery of gold and early techniques like filigree and granulation laid the foundations for centuries of craftsmanship. As styles evolved through Roman, Byzantine, and Renaissance eras, towns like Florence became creative centers where jewelry was treated as sculpture in miniature. Throughout the centuries, Italian artisans crafted treasured pieces for aristocracy and royalty, from Queen Margherita of Savoy’s pearl and diamond tiaras to revivalist creations by the Castellani family, who reimagined ancient designs for modern nobility. Even houses like Torrini, founded in 1369, survived across generations, proving how deeply craft is woven into Italy’s cultural fabric.

By the twentieth century, this heritage paved the way for the rise of contemporary icons like Buccellati, Pomellato, and Bvlgari. These maisons modernized tradition, introducing bold silhouettes, vibrant gemstones, and a new language of Italian elegance that felt expressive, sensual, and unmistakably modern. Among them, Bvlgari became the global emblem of Roman artistry: a brand that embraced its Greco-Roman roots while pushing design far beyond convention.

Today, that legacy continues in Valenza, the historic heart of Italy’s goldsmithing tradition. Bvlgari’s newly expanded Manifattura stands as the world’s largest single-brand jewelry facility, bringing together artisans, engineers, and designers in a 33,000-square-meter space dedicated to excellence. More than 1,100 craftspeople from over thirty nationalities work here, with plans to welcome hundreds more. The entire process, from precious metal work to gemstone setting, happens under one roof, ensuring both precision and preservation of skill.

The Scuola Bvlgari sits at the center of this vision. It is the maison’s first publicly accessible jewelry school, created in partnership with Italy’s Tarì Design School. Here, aspiring artisans train alongside masters, learning techniques that have shaped Italian jewelry for centuries while adapting them to contemporary design.

The facility itself mirrors the values it protects: a LEED Gold-certified environment powered by renewable energy, surrounded by rewilded greenery and nearly one million bees supporting biodiversity. Even its gold meets strict ethical standards, fully traceable and responsibly sourced.

Beyond innovation and sustainability, the Manifattura is designed as a human-centered space, with bright workshops, lounges, wellness programs, and quiet corners that remind us that artistry thrives when people do. This is luxury shaped by care, for the craft, for the environment, and for the artisans who bring each piece to life.

Italian jewelry has always been more than ornamentation. It is memory cast in metal, culture shaped into form, and artistry passed from hand to hand. When you wear a piece born from this tradition, you wear centuries of history, technique, and imagination. The past is a guide and a gift, but as Bvlgari shows in Valenza, we are the architects of our future.
