Pulling off a scarf requires a certain nonchalance. The effect should be easy breezy, effortless–but getting that look isn’t as simple as twirling some fabric around your neck and heading out the door. In fact, it’s hard to think of an accessory with equal power to be either outfit-making or outfit breaking and which side of the line you land is all about styling.
Not to mention, there’s a lot of scarf options available–and the style you choose will also determine the way it’s worn. A demure silk scarf and a chunky knit convey different messages, same goes for a wispy neckerchief or an oversized blanket scarf with fringe.
To guide you, here are the modern ways to style them this season.
As a hair tie
From ponytails to scarf-wrapped braids to hair buns, a scarf adds a touch of luxury and charm to your outfit. It’s a quick, effortless way to make a statement.

As a hair bandana
Worn around the head, this look is ideal for sun-soaked days when you want to protect your blowout or just make an entrance.

As a belt
Swap your belt for a silk scarf tied around your jeans. This styling trick makes a big impact–adds print, movement and a cinched silhouette all at once.
