SONA 2024: Top Fashion Moments

By Marane A. Plaza

Dubbed as “the biggest SONA in Philippine history” based on the number of confirmed attendees, today’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) by Philippine president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City was expected to present fashion moments from public servants and invited celebrities alike, and they did not disappoint. Severe tropical storm Carina may have threatened some parts of Luzon, but that did not stop the SONA attendees from bringing their A-Game with their fashion sense and causes they want to advocate and push.

Senator Nancy Binay arrived in a Randy Ortiz Filipiniana

Senator Nancy Binay arrived in a Randy Ortiz Filipiniana. Reportedly, the senator would campaign for her sister, incumbent Makati Mayor Abby Binay, in case the local chief executive decides to run for senator in May 2025.

Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas wore a West Philippine Sea-inspired Filipiniana designed by a local artist-activist, to send a ‘clear message to demilitarize the West Philippine Sea’ as she shared with the press during the red carpet segment. The black lace dress by Francis Yepez Yu, with a train featuring a painting by artist-activist Michael Joselo, featured the Philippine flag, the sea filled with boats on the blue side of the flag, and a woman with her fist up on the red side.

Brosas also said it was “good news” that Senate President Chiz Escudero has placed Cha-cha “in the backburner” as it does not really serve Filipino interests.

Meanwhile, DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman paid tribute to her Mindanao heritage with weaves reimagined on her purple Filipiniana, as designed by designer Avel Bacudio.

DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, who wore a navy blue ensemble with eyelet details, enumerated the environmental issues she wants to hear from the president on his Sona.

Fashion queen Heart Evangelista made quite the entrance at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City on Monday. The actress and new Senate Spouses Foundation Inc. (SPFI) president arrived in a backless modern Filipiniana by Filipino fashion designer Michael Leyva.

The front has a sash, which turns into a train in the back. She also had carried a white purse, as well as white and silver jewelry. Heart walked the red carpet with her husband, Senate President Chiz Escudero, his twins Chesi and Quino as well as Heart’s sister, Cam Ongpauco.

Presidential sister and Sen. Imee Marcos donned an ensemble which appeared to be inspired by a warrior with “Moro armor.” She said she expects her brother, President Marcos, to discuss solutions to “bigas at kapayapaan” (rice price and peace).

“Kaya ako nakaarmor ngayon, masyadong maraming mapusok,” she said in jest as she talked to Inquirer.
