Style Visionary Runways Manila: Fred Telarma on Filipino Identity in Multi-Use Fashion

By Stylish Team

For young, brilliant Filipino fashion designer Fred Telarma, advocating the Filipino identity in his fashion design philosophy is a must. Something he resonated well with the theme of the recently held Style Visionary Runways Manila.

Organized by Stylish Magazine in partnership with Coro Hotel — the chicest boutique hotel in Poblacion, Makati that strongly advocates for Filipino fashion, arts and culture — the recent Style Visionary Runways Manila fashion show put the spotlight on talented and inspiring Filipino fashion designers who are devoted to pushing uniquely Filipino identity in their creations.

Fred’s masterpieces always speak for themselves, with aesthetics always reverting back to his Filipino and Ilonggo heritage, with cool ingenuity translated to modern wearability.

But aside from the Pinoy flair apparent in his recent runway collection, the sustainability integrated in his designs is worth the applause. His “Smart Silhouettes” encourage multi-use in his ensembles “that will survive season upon season.”

“The silhouettes are spring-summer oriented with homage to shapes and patterns found in traditional Filipino barong and camisa, while strategically designed for multi-use, from day to night, from informal to formal, from sneakers to stilettos,” the designer shared.

“The patterns were strategically cut to highlight the delicate traditional Filipino weaving designs. As for design philosophy, overall it’s about designing and producing ensembles that speak and walk with a message, conveying a story in every turn,” he added.

True to its Filipino roots, the collection used a mix of traditional fabrics, such as Hablon from Iloilo, Inabel from Ilocos, Kantarines from Abra, as well as Rami and Jusi, with some commercial fabrics.

The Oriental vibes and vibrant colors of the Fred Telarma creations were an instant pick-me-uppers on the runway too, indeed making a mark that the distinctness of Filipino fashion sensibilities can truly translate to contemporary fashion anyone would so love to invest in and wear!
