TelaHistoria 2025 Highlights Modern Takes on Filipino Fabrics

By Dara Clariza Evangelista

The spotlight turned to the Newport Performing Arts Theater on August 1 at 6 PM as TelaHistoria: The Runway Story of Filipino Fabrics unfolded, an evening where modern, traditional, and avant-garde interpretations of the Filipiniana took center stage.

The accurate term to describe the  runway show would be “heritage fashion theater” as pieces narrated the depth of Filipino fashion identity from indigenous fabrics to Filipiniana silhouettes, presented on stage like art.

Presented by Global Linkages for the Filipino Youths, in partnership with Newport World Resorts, Balik Pinas Balik Saya, the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines, and the Philippine Marketing Association, the show was a vivid celebration of heritage and innovation. The event opened with a message from Alexis Revilla, Director of Marketing for TelaHistoria.

At its heart, TelaHistoria honored the resilient hearts and skilled hands of weaving communities across the country. From looms passed down through generations to the runway’s bright lights, each piece told a story of culture, identity, and pride. The event’s very name, combining “tela” (fabric) and “historia” (history + story), captured the essence of the evening: a tapestry of tradition, craftsmanship, and modern design.

Before the runway, guests explored a curated bazaar just outside the theater, showcasing exquisite Filipino-made products that perfectly complemented the evening’s theme.

The show itself unfolded in four segments, each reflecting a different dimension of the Filipiniana. The Avant-Garde category dazzled with bold, architectural silhouettes and dramatic headpieces. The Youth segment brought a burst of color and playful reinvention to the terno, blending streetwear influences with heritage details.

The Corporate collection offered modern, wearable interpretations fit for the boardroom while keeping the essence of tradition intact. Finally, the Luminaries portion featured prominent personalities, including ambassadors from Hungary and Malaysia, political leaders, and cultural advocates, gracing the runway in ensembles that embodied both prestige and patriotism.

From the intricate embroidery to the innovative silhouettes, TelaHistoria proved that Filipino fabrics are not relics of the past, but living art, ready to inspire the future of fashion, one weave at a time.
