Let’s be real—long before Hollywood started treating diversity like a trend, our very own Lea Salonga was already out here changing the world for millions of kids across the globe.
At the D23 Ultimate Disney Fan Event in California, the Broadway queen and absolute Disney Legend completely stole the show. She joined a massive reunion of original Disney Princess voices, treating the crowd to a flawless solo of Mulan’s “Reflection” and a total dream-come-true duet of Aladdin’s “A Whole New World” with R&B icon Brandy.
But while her vocals proved (once again) that her voice simply does not age, it was her backstage interview that truly stole the night.
When reporters asked her how it feels to know her voice helped generations of kids finally see themselves in the Disney universe, Lea dropped a beautiful reality check on what seeing yourself on screen actually does to a person.
“When you see yourself up there—and I mean, I’m Filipino and she’s Chinese [Mulan], but there is a bridge in there somewhere,” Lea shared. “And I could see how brave she was, which I think gave a lot of Asian women a permission to be brave in that way, and to occupy space, and to not be afraid of making strong choices with what they wanna do in life.”
The “Bridge” We All Needed
Lea totally hit the nail on the head. Back in the ’90s, hearing an Asian voice lead a global, mainstream animated movie was incredibly rare. By lending her soaring vocals to an Arabian princess and a fierce Chinese warrior, Lea built a real emotional bridge for kids all over Asia and the diaspora.
Even if you weren’t Chinese or Middle Eastern, hearing a voice that sounded like home coming from characters who were smart, independent, and completely unapologetic changed everything. It proved our voices belonged in the biggest stories in the world.
Giving Women “Permission” to Take Up Space
The best part of Lea’s response is her focus on the word “permission.” Culturally, women—and especially Asian women—have often been told to be polite, passive, or to just lay low.
But watching Mulan reject expectations, speak her mind, and literally save an entire empire taught a whole generation a different lesson. It gave young women the green light to “occupy space” in rooms where they used to feel invisible. It taught them to stop playing small, to make strong choices, and to unapologetically chase exactly what they want out of life.
Pure Pinoy Pride
Decades after making history, Lea Salonga is still unmatched. Her journey from Manila’s theater stages to becoming a global Disney Legend is the ultimate proof of how far Filipino talent can go.
Her D23 moment wasn’t just a heavy dose of childhood nostalgia. It was a beautiful reminder that when we give diverse voices a platform, we aren’t just creating great movies—we are giving the next generation the courage to be brave.
