Some fashion pieces fade with time. Others, like Lady Dior, just keep rewriting the rules.
By Dara Clariza Evangelista
The story of the “Lady Dior” began with a royal gift that changed fashion forever. In 1995, France’s First Lady Bernadette Chirac presented Princess Diana with a black leather bag that wasn’t even on the market yet.

The bag was designed by Dior’s creative director at the time, Gianfranco Ferré, and was originally named “Chouchou.” It stood out for its boxy shape and the now-iconic cannage stitching, inspired by Napoleon III’s rattan chairs.
Princess Diana loved the bag so much, she requested more in different colors, including a navy blue version to match her eyes. She carried it to events around the world, including her first and only Met Gala in 1996. That same year, Dior officially renamed the bag “Lady Dior” in her honor, a subtle tribute to her pre-marriage title, Lady Diana Spencer, and to her independence following her royal separation.

Nearly three decades later, the Lady Dior continues to evolve. Enter Jonathan Anderson, Dior’s newly appointed creative director, whose upcoming Spring/Summer 2026 collection features a fresh take on the iconic bag.
His reinterpretation stays true to the classic silhouette but introduces delicate bows in dreamy tones of pink and grey, along with a unique texture for the green version they showed. These subtle yet striking updates reimagine the Lady Dior for a new generation while preserving its timeless allure.

This bag has been seen on everyone from Jisoo of Blackpink to Jennifer Lopez, Blake Lively, and French cinema icon Marion Cotillard, who was the face of the bag for nearly a decade. Even here in the Philippines, fashion icons like Heart Evangelista, Kathryn Bernardo, Bea Alonzo, and Pia Wurtzbach carry the Lady Dior as a symbol of sophistication and self-expression.
More than just an accessory, the Lady Dior is a case study in fashion evolution. It teaches us that style isn’t about chasing trends, it’s about honoring heritage while staying open to transformation. One thoughtful detail at a time, Dior has managed to keep this “favorite” bag exactly that, for generations of women around the world.

And now, with Anderson at the helm, the Lady Dior is set to write its next chapter. Still classic. Still cool. And forever the favorite.
